LET THE WORD SPEAK Why We Preach Expository - and What It Means

Introduction

The faithful preaching of God’s Word stands at the center of the life of the church. Scripture does not merely support preaching - it commands it, defines it, and governs it. For this reason, we are committed to expository preaching, not as a preference, but as a biblical mandate.

What Is Expository Preaching?

Expository preaching is the proclamation of God’s Word in which:

  • The main point of the sermon is the main point of the text

  • The meaning of the passage is derived through literal, grammatical-historical interpretation

  • The preacher explains what God has said, rather than inserting his own ideas

In simple terms:

Expository preaching lets Scripture speak for itself.

Biblical Foundation for Expository Preaching

2 Timothy 4:2

“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and teaching.”

Nehemiah 8:8

“They read from the book, from the law of God, explaining and giving insight, and they provided understanding of the reading.”

2 Timothy 2:15

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God… accurately handling the word of truth.”

These passages show that preaching must be rooted in:

  • The Word itself

  • The accurate explanation of its meaning

  • The clear application to the hearer

Why We Preach Expository Sermons

i. Because God Has Spoken

The authority of preaching comes not from the preacher, but from Scripture.

ii. Because the Word Sanctifies

John 17:17 “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” Spiritual growth comes through the Word, not human opinion.

iii. Because It Guards Against Error

When Scripture sets the agenda, the preacher cannot avoid difficult truths or promote personal bias.

iv. Because It Produces True Disciples

Believers are matured by the consistent teaching of the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27).

v. Because It Honors Christ

Christ is revealed through the Scriptures (Luke 24:27). Faithful exposition exalts Him rightly.

What Expository Preaching Is Not:

  • It is not topical preaching driven by opinion

  • It is not motivational speaking with Bible verses added

  • It is not storytelling disconnected from the text

Rather, it is the careful unfolding of what God has already said.

The Method We Use

We interpret Scripture using the literal, grammatical-historical method, which means:

  • Literal – Words are understood in their normal sense

  • Grammatical – Attention is given to language and structure

  • Historical – The original context is considered

This approach ensures that the meaning comes from God, not man.

The Goal of Expository Preaching

The goal is not merely information, but transformation:

  • To glorify God

  • To edify the church

  • To call sinners to repentance

Hebrews 4:12

“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword…”

Conclusion

We preach expositionally because we believe the Bible is:

  • Inspired

  • Inerrant

  • Sufficient

  • Authoritative

Therefore, the most faithful thing a preacher can do is to proclaim what God has already said - clearly, accurately, and without compromise.

1 Thessalonians 2:13

“…you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also is at work in you who believe.”

May we always be a people shaped by the faithful preaching of His Word.
