Introduction
In many contemporary churches, the ideas of spiritual warfare and deliverance have been reshaped into something Scripture does not teach. What is often called “deliverance ministry” today is marked by emotionalism, supposed demon manifestations, and repeated attempts to cast demons out of believers.
Yet when we return to the Word of God, we find a far more sober, sufficient, and Christ-centred reality.
1. Salvation Is the Believer’s True Deliverance
The Bible teaches that deliverance is not an ongoing ritual - it is a completed act at salvation:
Colossians 1:13
Who rescued us from the authority of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son of His love...
This is decisive. The believer has already been:
Rescued from Satan’s authority
Transferred into Christ’s kingdom
There is no category in Scripture for a “partially delivered Christian.”
2. The Impossibility of a Demon-Possessed Christian
Modern deliverance teaching often claims that Christians can have demons. Scripture explicitly denies this.
The Indwelling Spirit
1 Corinthians 6:19
Or do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you…?
No Fellowship Between Christ and Darkness
2 Corinthians 6:15–16
Or what harmony has Christ with Belial… Or what agreement has the sanctuary of God with idols?”
The Sealing and Protection of the Believer
Ephesians 1:13
…you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise…
1 John 5:18
…He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.
The conclusion is unavoidable: The Holy Spirit and a demon cannot co-indwell the same person.
3. There is No New Testament Model for the “Deliverance” of Believers
There is not a single example in the New Testament where:
A Christian has a demon cast out
The church is instructed to perform exorcisms on believers
Instead, believers are commanded to:
Stand firm (Ephesians 6:11, 13–14)
Resist (James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:9)
Walk in obedience (John 14:15; 1 John 2:3–6)
4. What Biblical Spiritual Warfare Actually Is
The definitive passage is Ephesians 6:10–18. The emphasis is not on casting out demons, but on standing firm in God’s strength.
Ephesians 6:10–18 reads: 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the might of His strength.
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.
14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,
15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE.
16 In addition to all, having taken up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one,
17 also receive THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times with all prayer and petition in the Spirit, and to this end, being on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,
Spiritual warfare is:
Not dramatic confrontation
Not ritualistic deliverance
Not emotional manifestations
It is a daily life of obedience and dependence on God.
John 5:18 …He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.
5. The Armor of God - The Only Biblical Method
The believer’s battle is fought through these means:
• Belt of Truth
Anchoring the life in God’s revealed truth.
• Breastplate of Righteousness
Living in practical holiness based on Christ’s righteousness.
• Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Standing firm in the assurance of the gospel.
• Shield of Faith
Trusting God to extinguish doubt, fear, and temptation.
• Helmet of Salvation
Guarding the mind with assurance of salvation.
• Sword of the Spirit (Word of God)
Actively using Scripture to confront error and temptation.
• Prayer
Continual dependence upon God.
This is the only God-ordained “strategy” for spiritual warfare.
6. The Biblical Pattern: Submit and Resist
James 4:7
“Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
The Biblical Pattern:
We are never told to cast Satan out of believers
We are commanded to resist him through obedience
7. The Error of the “Modern Deliverance Ministry”
What is commonly practiced today as “deliverance” is not found in Scripture and must be evaluated carefully.
Common Features
Claiming Christians are demon-possessed
Repeated “deliverance sessions”
Emotional manifestations (shaking, shouting, etc.)
Extra-biblical methods and formulas
Why This Is Problematic?
It Denies the Sufficiency of Scripture
Your doctrinal foundation rightly affirms that Scripture is sufficient and not to be supplemented
It Undermines the Finished Work of Christ
Suggesting believers still need “deliverance” implies salvation was incomplete.
It Confuses Sanctification with Deliverance
The New Testament calls believers to grow in holiness, not to undergo repeated exorcisms.
It Resembles Neo-Gnostic Thinking
It often introduces hidden knowledge, special techniques, and spiritual elitism.
It Shifts Focus from Scripture to Experience
Truth becomes subjective rather than grounded in God’s Word
It Confuses Christ’s Unique Ministry with Ours
Jesus and the apostles cast out demons as a direct display of divine authority and to authenticate new revelation (Matthew 12:28; Hebrews 2:3–4). This was a unique, foundational ministry tied to the inauguration of the Kingdom and the apostolic era. Believers today are never commanded to replicate this ministry, but instead to stand firm, resist the devil, and walk in obedience (Ephesians 6:11–18; James 4:7). To equate modern “deliverance” practices with Christ’s ministry is to misunderstand the purpose and uniqueness of His works. The miracles of Christ were “signs of the Kingdom” (Matthew 12:28)
The apostles’ miracles were “signs of an apostle” (2 Corinthians 12:12) Christ’s ministry = authentication and revelation
Our ministry = proclamation and obedience Therefore Christ cast out demons to reveal His authority, and believers resist the devil by submitting to God.
8. True Freedom Is Found in Obedience
Biblical freedom is not:
Emotional release
Dramatic encounters
Repeated “deliverance” rituals
It is:
Walking in truth (John 8:31–32)
Living in righteousness
Trusting in Christ’s finished work
Conclusion
Spiritual warfare is not about casting out demons from believers. It is about:
Standing firm in Christ
Living in obedience
Using the Word of God
Trusting in God’s promises
The believer is already delivered. The battle is not for deliverance - but for faithfulness. Therefore:
Put on the full armour of God
Submit to Him
Resist the devil
And according to Scripture - the enemy will flee.
